IT Outsourcing with certified IT security

Infopulse invests in information security

Information security is an essential aspect for Infopulse in IT outsourcing. Infopulse invests in the infrastructure and staff training to ensure the quality factor of sustained information security. Not least because of the inclusion in the group structure of the Norwegian Evry Group, international standards of expertise and governance play a major role in the corporate practice of Infopulse.

Infopulse maintains a team of experts in information security who are occupied by internal and external information security tasks. The team monitors all safety aspects of the business processes. In addition, it also advises third party companies, for example in penetration testing.

Information security is a cross-section functionality that also plays a major role on site, in the project work, and in the customer service. The proof of expertise is therefore also essential. For these reasons, the certification according to recognized professional standards is important, such as the CISSP certification. In the D-A-CH region of this competence is represented by Dr. Friedrich Boeckh, who has been certified CISSP since January 2012.

The CISSP certification program

The CISSP certification program was created about 20 years ago. IT security professionals founded in 1988 in the USA a consortium with the goal of establishing an internationally recognized test of knowledge about IT security. The consortium standardized by the "Common Book of Knowledge (CBK)" the scope of expertise and set out guidelines for an adequate examination of professional competence. In addition to the theoretical knowledge, the evidence of relevant professional experience (at least three years, if a university degree is held) and the commitment to comply with professional ethics is mandatory.

Since 1989, the consortium is called the "International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium, Inc.", abbreviated to (ISC)². Since 1994, the tests of "Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)" are performed. In 2002, the 10,000th CISSP certification has been achieved. There are now about 70,000 CISSPs in 135 countries. The (ISC)² has in addition to its headquarters in the United States also offices in London, Tokyo and Hong Kong. Since 2004, the CISSP certification is accredited by ANSI as a professional training in accordance with ISO/IEC 17024. The role of CISSPs in the business is determined by the following task areas:

  • Development of information security policies of the company and ongoing compliance monitoring
  • Technical support on the implementation of security solutions
  • Monitoring of internal and external compliance requirements

The Common Book of Knowledge is regularly checked for timeliness and relevance. The updated version from 2012 includes the following knowledge areas:

  • Access Control
  • Telecommunications and Network Security
  • Information Security Governance and Risk Management
  • Software Development Security
  • Cryptography
  • Security Architecture and Design
  • Operations Security
  • BCM and DR (Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Planning)
  • Legal, Regulations, Investigations and Compliance
  • Physical (Environmental) Security

The CISSP examination is performed by a six-hour written multiple-choice test. For the successful completion, 70% of the maximum points must be achieved.

After successful testing are the CISSPs obliged to keep their skills up to date. This shall be achieved through participation in conferences, other training and specialized volunteer activities.

Other IT security certifications

Besides the CISSP certification, (ISC)² provides more programs and additional qualifications, e. g. especially for U.S. authorities. The full information is available on.

The ISACA ("Information Systems Audit and Control Association") is another vendor independent professional organization that is dedicated to information security. The origins – and therefore the focus of its work – are in the auditing of IT systems. The CISA and CISM certifications are based knowledge domains that overlap largely with the CBK of the CISSP program. More information is available at www.isaca.org

The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) is issuing the IT baseline protection approach which is mandatory for German authorities. This represents, together with the IT baseline protection catalogs and the recommendations of standard safety measures, a de-facto standard for IT security in Germany, which is also important for private sector organizations, especially if they apply for public contracts. Experts on IT baseline protection can be certified as BSI auditors, additional information is available at https://www.bsi.bund.de/SharedDocs/Downloads/DE/BSI/Zertifizierung/VB-Personen_V2_1.pdf?__blob=publicationFile.

Interesting Facts about country Ukraine

PDF Print E-mail

Ukraine, one of the largest European countries, is world renowned for its hospitality. The well-meaning, sincere Ukrainians with their delicious Ukrainian cuisine, the amount of attractions and tourist destinations make easy for the visitor to lose his heart in the Ukraine.

In the west of Ukraine, the mountains of the  Carpathian Moutains (2000 m) dominate the landscape, as well as on the southern peninsula of Crimea Mountains (1500 m). In the south, Ukraine has more than 1,000 kilometer of coastline on the Black Sea.

Ukraine is an open, export-oriented economy but in need of modernization and diversification. Since 2009, Ukraine is a member of the WTO.

Between Germany and Ukraine, there exists a regular political exchange. More than 1,000 German companies are represented in Ukraine. In addition to the embassy, the "Delegation of German Industry", the representation of the German Industry and Commerce, also takes care for your interests in the Ukraine. Since 1993, there is a German-Ukrainian cultural agreement. In the same year was established in Kiev the Goethe-Institute, whose network nowaday includes reading rooms and language learning centers in several regions of Ukraine. In 1998, the Office of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) was established in Kiev. The demand for academic and extracurricular German lessons keeps at a high level, as well as applications for DAAD scholarships. Ukraine is part of the Bologna-Process; the universities provide bachelor and master degrees today.

Due to the removal of visa requirement for EU citizens the traveling to Ukraine has been a simple matter to citizens of Germany and other countries of Western Europe. This pleasant little privilege makes the first entry into the country easier, of course, for many Western newcomers.

The Ukraine has many tourist attractions that wait to be discovered. Of course, primarily in the capital of Ukraine, Kiev. Kiev is situated picturesquely on the banks of the broad Dneprs (ukr. Dnipro). It is with its 2001 km the third longest river in Europe.

Worldwide known is for example the Kiev Pechersk Lavra. Historically, Kiev is one of the most important religious centers of the Orthodox world. With its monasteries, cathedrals and churches, the powerful ancient Kiev is and remains to millions of Orthodox Christians in the Ukraine, Russia and Belarus, the center of Orthodoxy. In 1990 the monastery Pechersk has been taken in the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage - a testament to the great historical importance of this place not only for the Ukraine but also for the modern world as a whole.

The Golden Gate of Kiev (Soloti Vorota) dates from 11th Century and was built under the reign of Yaroslav the Wise. The Golden Gate stood until 1240 AD when it was completely destroyed by Mongol warriors of Batu Khan. In 1982, shortly before the anniversary of the 1500 year Kiev, the Golden Gate and a small part of the original walls have been restored and now serves as a museum.

The Museum of Folk Architecture and Folkways of Ukraine (The Pirogovo open-air museum) is one of the largest open-air museums worldwide. Pirogovo is a unique combination of beautiful forested landscapes and architectural compositions that beautifully complement the natural environment. The museum was founded in 1969 on the initiative of the Ukrainian Society for preservation as a National Museum of folk architecture and traditions of the Ukrainian Soviet Republic. The museum consists of approximately 500 individual venues. Almost all are authentic residential and agricultural buildings, which were brought from different regions. Many visitors come to the regularly held festivals of folk art and crafts. There you can craft ceramic and pottery with your own hands, sewing a traditional embroidered shirt, listening to the "Kobzar" and become familiar with the art of decorative Easter eggs (ukr. Pysanka).

The House with Chimaeras or Gorodetsky House is probably the most unusual building in Kiev. It was built by the famous architect Vladislav Gorodetsky in 1903 in modern style. This house has always been associated with legends. The elaborate facade is decorated with sculptures and exotic animals: dolphins, frogs, mermaids or mythical creature (chimears). In the stairwell hands a huge lamp that was designed as an image of a catfish in lotus. After the architect sold the house, it was from 1917 until World War II used as a residence. Afterwards, a hospital was located here.  In recent years, the "Chimera House" restored and now serves as a museum "Ukrainian Art" and as a presidential residence. Here are also held official diplomatic events.

Kiev is prosperous metropolis full of life. Many museums and of course the many parks of Kiev invite you to walk and explore. Anyone who visits the Ukraine should also turn to Lvov (ukr. Lviv), former known as Lemberg. Lvov is the center of western Ukraine and is also considered the capital of the Ukrainian humor.

The proud past gives the country Ukraine the confidence today to go his own way - in spite of many prejudices that exist in the West. Visit to Ukraine as a curious traveler and let yourself be fascinated by this country.

10 Steps to Outsourcing Strategy

PDF Print E-mail

Gartner analysts assume that many CIOs could gain greater savings in outsourcing and a more efficient IT, than they actually do. Outsourcing projects should therefore be tackled from the beginning with the right strategy. A clear business-driven sourcing strategy is therefore the key to success.

"For companies that cannot cope this critical initial phase in the sourcing life cycle, it is not possilbe to choose in the sequence the right provider to negotiate a good contract and manage the deal, effectively" said analyst Claudio Da Rold in a recent study. Gartner presents ten steps that make up a model for a promising strategy.

1. Setting up Context and Objectives: according to Da Rold, the priorities and rules and principles that drive the strategy and any subsequent decision and activity need to be defined in addition to the conceptual approach to outsourcing.

2. Evaluating the State of Service: costs and service performances of the already existing internal and external contracts require closer scrutiny. More specifically, the enterprise architecture need to be considered. It is a question of whether and to what extent a necessary upgrade in service delivery is necessary to achieve the objectives.

3.  Measuring of the capacities for Service and Multi-Sourcing-Management: scope, situation and maturity level for the needed resources for multi-sourcing should be determined. Controls must also ensure a sufficient knowledge and skills of staff to deliver the reuqired quantity of services for business, application and infrastructure processes.

4. Evaluating of Restrictions and Opportuinites: industry-specific and regional developments play a role, like the economic situation, the regulatory environment, compliance requirements and technological issues. The internal situation can be an important factor in companies - such as corporate culture, the experience of change processes and the risk propensity. On this basis, risk profiles and a framework for risk management should be developed.

5. Gap Analysis: outsourcing requires planning because of the gap between requirements and objective on one hand and the current situation on the other. Gartner advises users to define the exact extent of the gap and to compare all the possible alternative scenarios to clos the gap.

6.  Analyzing the External Market: the market for IT services with is dominated by market dynamics which permanently changes the provider landscape as well as the competition patterns. Therefore it should be decided only on the basis of a precise market analysis which service is taken at what time to complete.

7. Applying Scenario Planning: risks should be balanced against the potential of various sourcing scenarios at this stage. The previously mentioned factors of course will be taken into account. The results should be available afterwards on valid data base, which fits a combination of vendors and outsourcing model that is best for business.

8. Risk Analysis: the most common risks associated with sourcing and selection of partners should be analysed thoroughly in a detailed analysis. "Use tools and guidlines to weight and manage risks", writes Da Rold. "Cut down the criteria for risk evaluation precisely for the types of considered vendors and products".

9.  Establish a Business Case. the business case should cover the cost of outsourcing the internal IT team and the selection and negotiation of projects and all aspects of remodeling. It should assess the likelihood of workload variance and service requirements have to be considered. If everything is properly evaluated, the return on investment can be calculated correctly.

10. Define an Action Plan: this action plan will also refer to changes in governance and to the organization of management and outsourcing relationships. "Define a plan for communication and change management and develop a program and action plan to implement the chosen strategy", Gartner recommends.

"CIOs, IT directors and outsourcing managers can also use the strategy to explain how the IT department works and how it will likely develop in future" notes Da Rold. The need for better business results from IT investment will drive companies to develop new strategies. The study "Outsourcing Advisory: Sourcing Strategy Phase Overview" is available at Gartner.

So, it goes without saying that Infopulse is highly delighted and proud to now have Michael Haag in its team as Senior IT Project Manager.

"I have already had the pleasure of completing a number of high quality projects with the help of Infopulse and, working within the company as part of the team, I am now very much looking forward to working on some major projects and creating some great products to realise the visions of Infopulse´s prestigious customers.", comments Mr Haag.

A few words about the Gartner Symposium 2011 in Barcelona

PDF Print E-mail

The Gartner Symposium in Barcelona 2011 came to a close just four days ago. Although it takes time to form a clear picture of the various messages presented at the many different events, everyone, of course, wants to know what the symposium was like, what came out of it and what trends will shape the future.

Was there really much that was new? The hot topics were social networks, mobile devices and, as before, the "cloud". Not much was new in fact, and yet the forecasts based on the vastly increasing influence of these particular phenomena certainly made you sit up and take notice. Whilst dinosaurs are assumed to have ruled the earth for 160 million years and there are still a few mainframe computers around, just 30 yers after its birth, the end of the personal computer is already in sight. Many analysts predict that emails will last even less time. There is no doubt about it - social networks, smart phones and other mobile devices are advancing rapidly and, when carrying out their daily business activities, employees will not be persuaded to do without the devices and software benefits they value so highly in their private life. It is inevitable that the distinction between what is private and what is business will become blurred and this poses an enormous challenge for IT security in all its aspects, from data security to privacy and the protection of intellectual property. To make matters worse, the big players in this area, Apple, Google and, now that it is revitalising itself in combination with Microsoft, Nokia, care precious little about business concerns. On the other hand, the pro-business company, RIM, which brought us the Blackberry, appears to be about to vanish into thin air, just like the PC and e-mail. The gaps left behind by the triumphal advance of the big three (or four) must and will be plugged by software products. The good news is that this means software developers will never run out of work.

Gartner Symposium - Barcelona 2011The  cloud throws up very similar problems. The use of applications in the cloud is an interesting idea, but do you want to entrust your data to the cloud? Where does it go? Who can see it or even steal it? Again, the issues that spring to mind revolve around IT security: the protection of intellectual property, data protection - from a purely legal point of view, can information received from clients or from employees of a European or German company simply be shunted into the cloud so that they can be used cost-effectively, for example, by an outsourced help desk somewhere else in the world?

Last but not least, whilst the cloud appears to be a convenient and cost-effective method of storing data, it raises some major issues. Protection from theft or unauthorised use must be provided and an availability of at least "four 9s" must be guaranteed. Furthermore, the low speed at which large quantities of data can be transferred to the cloud is a challenge which should not be underestimated. Here too, there is an enormous amount of work to be done in the area of software development. As software developers with many years of experience in the area of data security and data archiving, we will present solutions to some of these problems by completing a development that will make the cloud a data cradle. Other tasks, we will tackle together with our clients and partners. There is certainly a lot to be done. Or, as Cognizant put it: "The Future is Now!"
